A 405-lb pull is genuinely impressive on a 165-lb frame — a 2.45× bodyweight lift that clears the Elite threshold in most published standards — but the same 405 lbs on a 300-lb person is a Novice-to- Intermediate number. Absolute load tells you almost nothing on its own. The only meaningful way to benchmark a deadlift is as a ratio to bodyweight, measured against validated population data. That context is what turns a raw number into actionable information: you understand where you stand today, and you see a specific target to train toward.

How to Use These Standards
The five classification levels — Untrained, Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, and Elite — each represent a distinct population range, not an arbitrary label. ExRx.net derives these thresholds from aggregate data across thousands of lifters in each weight class, which is why the ratios differ between men and women rather than using a single universal multiplier. A woman pulling 1.0× bodyweight sits at the Intermediate boundary — the same relative achievement for her population as a man pulling 1.75× bodyweight for his.
The most common mistake is entering a weight that was not a true one-rep maximum. If you did 275 lbs for 3 reps last week and still had another rep in reserve, your actual 1RM is probably 10–15 lbs higher. For the most accurate result, either test a genuine 1RM under controlled conditions or use a 1RM calculator to estimate your max from a recent heavy set. Entering a sub-maximal load will underclassify you.
These standards are also sport-agnostic. A competitive powerlifter uses a competition-legal hip-hinge deadlift; someone training for general fitness might pull with a trap bar or semi-sumo stance. ExRx.net standards are calibrated to conventional deadlift data, so there will be slight discrepancies if you primarily pull sumo (typically 3–8% more favorable due to reduced bar path) or trap bar (typically 10–15% more favorable due to load placement). Use the numbers as a directional benchmark, not a competition ranking.
Finally, do not read the Novice-to-Intermediate transition as a wall. Research on progressive overload consistently shows that intermediate lifters add strength more slowly than beginners — the 1.5× to 1.75× bodyweight range for men typically takes 12–24 months of focused deadlift training depending on genetics, program quality, and consistency. What matters is that you have a concrete target rather than training without a reference point.

Example 1 — Male, 185 lbs, pulls 315 lbs
Ratio: 315 ÷ 185 = 1.70× bodyweight. Classification: Intermediate. The ExRx.net Intermediate threshold for men is 1.75× BW, so this lifter is 9 lbs away from advancing — a realistic 4–6 week goal with consistent programming. At 2.0× BW, the Elite target is 370 lbs, which typically requires 12–18 additional months of focused work. Example 2 — Female, 132 lbs, pulls 155 lbs
Ratio: 155 ÷ 132 = 1.17× bodyweight. Classification: Advanced. The Advanced threshold for women is 1.25× BW (165 lbs at this bodyweight). She is already above the 1.0× Intermediate threshold — bodyweight deadlift for women is one of the cleaner markers of genuine strength development. The Elite target of 1.25× BW (165 lbs) is only 10 lbs away, making this an achievable short-term goal with proper progressive overload applied to the deadlift specifically.
Example 3 — Male, 220 lbs, pulls 450 lbs
Ratio: 450 ÷ 220 = 2.05× bodyweight. Classification: Elite. A 450-lb deadlift at 220 lbs clears the 2.0× Elite threshold by 11 lbs. For reference, IPF World Championship competitors in the 93 kg class (about 205 lbs) typically open at 240–270 kg (530–595 lbs), placing this lifter in the top 10–15% of competitive powerlifters globally.
